Shakur Stevenson vs Shuichiro Yoshino Fight Preview

Stevenson, who is now competing in the more competitive lightweight class, will look to make a statement when he faces Shuichiro Yoshino.

Will Stevenson be able to keep up this remarkable run? Or will the man from Japan bring forth a great deal of uproar?

Two months from today, on April 8th, the main event will be a WBC lightweight title eliminator between Shakur Stevenson and Shuichiro Yoshino. The winner of this fight will earn the right to challenge the undisputed lightweight champion, Devin “The Dream” Haney, for the WBC lightweight championship.

The main event of the night, Stevenson vs. Yoshino, will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, and will be sponsored by Top Rank. Stevenson, who is undefeated with nine knockouts, took Bill Haney at his word when he indicated last week that Devin planned to remain at 135 pounds for the entirety of 2023 and defend his four lightweight titles against all challengers. Stevenson now has a perfect record of 19-0.

If Haney confronts the 34-year-old Vasyl Lomachenko on May 20th, it will be a major letdown for everyone involved if he decides to give up his four belts in order to avoid fighting the winner of Stevenson and Yoshino’s fight. Both Shakur and Yoshino would rather face Haney in a fight for all four belts than have the championships split up, with Haney having the option to go up to 140 pounds following his bout with Lomachenko in May.

Shakur and Yoshino would prefer this scenario. Due to Haney’s lack of transparency on his goals, it is difficult to predict what the next step will be for him if he is successful in getting past Lomachenko. If Haney makes a public pledge to fight whoever emerges victorious from the bout between Stevenson and Yoshino, he will expose himself to widespread criticism in the event that he is unable to fulfil his promise. If one of these two brilliant contenders did not pursue the mandatory path with the World Boxing Council, then they would not be given the opportunity to fight Haney for the championship.

Although both Haney and his father Bill have stated that they are willing to compete against the greatest at 135, this has not yet taken place. The most notable victories in Haney’s career have come at the hands of opponents like Jorge Linares, George Kambosos Jr., and Joseph Diaz Jr., all of whom are susceptible to defeat.
Boxing fans who aren’t particularly knowledgeable about the sport don’t know much about the powerful 31-year-old Shuichiro Yoshino since he has spent his entire eight-year professional career fighting only in Japan, his native country. As a result, not much is known about him.

Shakur Stevenson, a boxing prodigy who is now pursuing gold in another class, will be competing in his home state of New Jersey. On April 8, at the Prudential Center, the 25-year-old will compete against Shuichiro Yoshino in an elimination bout for the WBC lightweight championship.

A winner of the silver medal at the Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, Stevenson defeated Joet Gonzalez by an unanimous decision in 2019 to claim the vacant WBO featherweight championship. Two years later, the rapid-fire southpaw defeated Jeremiah Nakathila by an unanimous decision to win the interim WBO junior lightweight championship. He subsequently dethroned Jamel Herring by technical knockout to become the complete champion in the division.

Stevenson defeated Oscar Valdez by unanimous decision to earn the WBC and Ring Magazine championships, but he lost those titles after failing to make weight for his fight against Robson Conceicao in September, which he won via unanimous decision.

Now, Stevenson is looking to become a three-division champion in the lightweight class, where he will compete against the likes of Devin Haney, Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia, and Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Yoshino made his professional debut in 2015 and won the lightweight championship of his home country of Japan in just his sixth fight. He has won his last three fights by knockout, with his most recent fight being against Masayoshi Nakatani in November. He is presently riding a three-fight knockout run. (KO 6). The 31-year-old will be competing in a battle for the first time outside of Japan.
