Will Lautaro Martinez be an excellent signing for Barcelona?

Lautaro Javier Martinez arrived in Inter Millan two years ago for 19.5 million euros from the Argentine side Racing Club. Lautaro Martinez struggled in his first season at Inter Milan, managing just nine goals and one assist.  This season, Lautaro Martinez has been one of the stars of Serie A.

He has proven to the world that Inter Millan was right to invest a lot of money in him.

This season, Lautaro Martinez has registered 16 goals and four assists in all competition so far this season, forming a formidable partnership with Romelu Lukaku to help Inter Millan become title challengers. He has also caught the attention of several top clubs, with many elite clubs across in need of a new number 9. Lautaro Martinez has quickly become one of the most sought after forwards in Europe. It looks like Martinez is likely to join the Catalan giants Barcelona this summer.

The reigning La Liga champions are in search of a replacement for Luis Suarez, who is 33 years old now, and the Argentine could be the perfect replacement. He could also team up with his compatriot Lionel Messi.

Is Lautaro Martinez the right man to replace Luis Suarez?

Martinez is now at the top of Barcelona’s transfer wish list, and they view him as Luis Suarez’s long term successor, with the Uruguayan forward entering the twilight years of his career.

Braithwaite, who was signed from Leganes in February as cover for the injured duo Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele, was always going to be a temporary measure and was never expected to feature in the club’s plans moving forward. Martinez is a decent option to take up the baton from Barcelona’s prolific sharpshooter and would be a massive upgrade to the current Luis Suarez. He has age on his side with a younger set of legs and has pace in abundance. Martinez is more than just a goal scorer. His end product has often been a critical feature of his game, along with his excellent pressing and build-up play. A section of the Barcelona fans is of the view that Suarez is a defensive liability, and he does not press enough. Martinez seems to possess a similar skillset to Suarez except that he possesses the athleticism that Suarez lacks. Martinez’s overall game is one of the best in Europe. He is a versatile attacker capable of playing as a sole striker, a second striker, or with a strike partner upfront. His movement opens up space for others, making him perfect for a team that already plays an expansive game. Players with such qualities don’t come along very often. There is justification to Barcelona’s belief that Martinez is the natural heir to Suarez. Age is not on the Uruguayan’s side, and with every passing season, he is finding it tough to maintain his fitness. His injury layoffs are coming more frequently and are keeping him out for longer.

What’s next for Lautaro Martinez?

Martinez is one of Europe’s hottest prospects after announcing himself at Inter Millan and Barcelona are not the only club who need his services this summer. Clubs like Man City and Chelsea are also keeping an eye on him. If there is any club in the world, who will be willing to splash any amount of money to get his services, it would be Man City. Pep Guardiola will be on the lookout to rebuild his squad after experiencing a poor season so far and will be looking to sign more quality to the attacking third of his team.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is also desperately in need of a new striker with Olivier Giroud and Mitchy Batsuayi looking to leave Chelsea this summer.

Their potential exits will leave Lampard with just one recognized striker in Tammy Abraham. As such, a new striker will be a significant priority for Chelsea in the summer transfer window. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has never been shy to spend money, especially on players he feels could improve Chelsea and help them win trophies. Lampard has the money to spend if only he can convince Martinez to sign for him. However, Barcelona looks favorite to land the services of Martinez because Martinez desires to play alongside his compatriot Messi. Although Martinez is not a world-beater yet, he seems destined for even greater things is already on course to become a great player in his own right, if he continues to improve season after season.
