Maintaining a lengthy winning streak in a dangerous division like heavyweight can be difficult, but Bellator 293 headliners Marcelo Golm and Daniel James will both enter the cage on Saturday night riding four-fight winning streaks and with the chance to pick up a victory that positions them as a potential title challenger.
Fans of mixed martial arts may be more acquainted with Golm. He had a four-fight UFC career that began with a 47-second submission win but ended with three consecutive losses. Following a pair of regional victories, Golm was given the chance to compete in the Bellator cage, where he quickly found success, first stopping Billy Swanson with punches and then causing Davion Franklin to tap out to a rear-naked choke.
Golm, who is rated fifth in the Bellator heavyweight rankings, made his pro debut in 2015. He went 1-3 in the UFC before winning four in a run, including two in Bellator. The 30-year-old last competed in July when he submitted Davion Franklin.
He now faces James, a fighter with more professional experience but only one battle on a stage as large as Bellator. In that chance – James’ most recent fight – he defeated Bellator veteran Tyrell Fortune via second-round TKO.
Neither fighter values the participation of the formal judges. Golm’s ten career wins have all come by stoppage, whereas James has 14 career victories, only one by decision. When the two fight at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, California, the ingredients are there for a traditional heavyweight finish.
Cat Zingano will square off against Leah McCourt in a women’s featherweight battle in the co-main event, which will feature more familiar faces.
After her UFC tenure ended with a 1-4 record, Zingano joined Bellator and has since won all three of her fights. McCourt has won six of her seven Bellator fights, making this a fight between two women listed in Bellator’s top ten women’s pound-for-pound list, with the victor advancing to a fight against champion Cris Cyborg.
James, 41, went pro in 2014 and competed at Bellator. He wouldn’t fight for the company again until November, when he defeated Tyrell Fortune via TKO. James has won four consecutive fights, all by TKO.Zingano is a former Ring of Fire bantamweight and flyweight champion who has defeated Raquel Pennington, Miesha Tate, and Amanda Nunes among others. However, she was defeated in 14 seconds by Ronda Rousey for the UFC bantamweight championship in 2015. Zingano has gone 4-3 since then and is on a three-fight victory streak with Bellator.
Zingano wants to face Bellator featherweight champion Cris Cyborg, who claims Zingano is avoiding her. The two have exchanged words, with Zingano asking for independent drug testing for both if a fight occurs.
McCourt, who wants to be a candidate herself, stands in her way. McCourt is 6-1 in Bellator and 1-1 in her last two bouts. She is ranked eighth in the featherweight rankings (Zingano is ranked first). McCourt, who primarily fights in Dublin, last fought in September when she defeated Dayana Silva.
