UFC 286: Edwards vs Usman 3 Full Fight Preview

On March 18, the UFC will host its second pay-per-view of the month and return to London. UFC 286 takes place at London’s O2 Arena, the promotion’s first PPV event in the United Kingdom in seven years, and features a trilogy bout between champion Leon Edwards and challenger Kamaru Usman.

And now, as the UFC comes to London’s O2 Arena, the champion, Jamaican-born Edwards, will make his first defence of the title. As a follow-up to last year’s two sold-out Fight Nights, the stadium is now hosting the UFC’s first pay-per-view event in Britain since 2016. Former lightweight championship candidate Justin Gaethje faces off against up-and-coming contender Rafael Fiziev in the co-main event.
Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards will meet in a repeat match with the lightweight title held by “Rocky” on the line.

Last August, the world was stunned when Leon Edwards took out Kamaru Usman to win the UFC welterweight championship. Now, in what should be an exciting trilogy fight, the two will finally resolve their differences. Can Edwards finally become the undisputed UFC lightweight champion? If Usman wins again, Edwards’ return might be ruined.

The UFC has discovered a worthy successor to “D-Rod” in Bryan Barberena, another lightweight slugger. Barberena faces “Gunni,” who is making his octagon comeback precisely a year after ending a two-fight losing streak with a decision victory over Takashi Sato.

Since UFC 204, when local hero Michael Bisping faced off against Dan Henderson in Manchester, England has hosted a big UFC event for the first time. The two cards share a lot of similarities. Unexpected UFC kings Evan Edwards and Michael Bisping both defend their thrones in their native countries. Having tied the series 1-1, Edwards will aim to seize the lead against Usman, just as Bisping did when he avenged an earlier defeat to Henderson.

When Edwards and Usman were fighting for the UFC lightweight championship last August, Edwards unleashed a hellacious Hail Mary head kick that ended the fight and evened the score. Umar Usman was leading on all three judges’ scorecards and was less than a minute away from matching Anderson Silva’s record of 16 straight UFC victories when he was knocked out cold. Although he is the heavy favourite to win the world championship again, Usman will have to settle for second place all-time behind Silva.

A lightweight battle that promises to be a knockout will finish out the undercard. Justin Gaethje, appropriately dubbed “The Highlight,” returns to provide just that in a crucial fight against Rafael Fiziev at 155 pounds. In addition, lightweight contender Gunnar Nelson returns for a pivotal rematch against the grizzled veteran Bryan Barberena. Casey O’Neil is hoping to keep her perfect record intact against the experienced Jennifer Maia. To kick off the PPV, past championship candidate Marvin Vettori faces off against up-and-comer Roman Dolidze.
