Pittsburgh Penguins leading scorer and captain Sidney Crosby has come down with an injury. He left Saturday’s victory against the Chicago Blackhawks early with a lower-body injury. He had left the game during the third period.

The Pittsburg Penguins are part of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League and have the longest active postseason appearance streak in NHL; they have qualified for six Stanley Cup finals and have won five times. 1991,1992,2009,2016 and 2017.

Crosby is a lefty shooter and has been playing for the team since 2005 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time. How did the injury occur? He was seen to have blocked a shot from Blackhawk’s defenseman Eric Gustafsson taking it off his ankle and appeared to catch his skate awkwardly earlier in the shift while trying to avoid Gustafsson’s check and the defenseman leg made contact with his.

Crosby left the ice after the second period

He finished the second period but did not return for the third. Jared McCann filled in at center with Jake Guentzel and Alex Galchenyuk on the top lane. He played 14:30 until he left the game and Dominik Simon took McCann’s spot on the left-wing with Evgeni Malkin

According to sources, he was also known to have had an incident with his left leg earlier in the game but appeared to be fine. In 2011, he sustained a concussion that left him sidelined for the rest of the season. Last year, he suffered a setback against the New Jersey Devils in November and Sat for three games. The Penguins went 0-2-1 during his absence and slipped into a tie for first place in the Eastern Conference with the Devils. The Penguins clearly did very well without him a year ago and will probably repeat their progress this time around.

“He is being evaluated as we speak… We will get more information on Monday” says Mike Sullivan, the coach of the Penguins. The team has had its toll on injuries this year. A few days ago, Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang was out with a lower-body injury which was sustained in the third period 6-4 loss in Boston. He missed the battle with Chicago yesterday and again mike Sullivan had said they would like to have him back as quickly as possible. Prior to his injury, Letang was on pace for a 22-goal, 66-point season in 2019-20, registering four goals and 12 points in 15 games. In 65 games last season, he finished with 16 goals and 56 points. John Marino took his place and played quite well.

Lots of injuries amongst the Penguins

Patrick Hornqvist, Bryan Rust, Nick Bjugstad, Evgeni Malkin and now Sidney are players who have suffered injuries this season. The team did not allow these injuries to affect their progress. They are currently at the third position in the metropolitan division, will they make it to the top without their captain and highest goal scorer?

Malkin has been playing for the Penguins since 2004, nicknamed “Geno”, an excellent center who also plays for the Russian national team. Probably he could be able to shoulder Crosby’s potential absence and continue to move the team to the top. He has been overshadowed by achievements of Crosby and Ovechkin but he is also a very gold player. He won Calder Trophy with 85 points in 2006-2007 and is one of the 13 centers in national hockey league history with three first-team all-star selection. And let us not ignore the fact that he is one of the 15 players in NHL history with multiple scoring titles. According to The Hockey News, Malkin, Crosby, and Connor McDavid are the only players to win the Art Ross multiple times during the Salary-cup era.

Though Sidney Crosby is the backbone of the team, while he is gone, maybe he will be gone for longer than we think, Malkin is definitely the player who can hold up the team to victory. He is recognized by many people and with so many accomplishments and experience, he can do a good job, even better than Crosby.
