Should Man United consider replacing De Gea with Dean Henderson?

Dean Henderson is enjoying his first-ever Premier League campaign on loan at Sheffield United from Man United, with his team sitting in the seventh position on the league table. Dean Henderson joined Sheffield United on loan for the 2018-19 season in search of more regular first-team football and was a crucial part of Sheffield’s promotion to the Premier League. He signed a new long term contract with Man United before returning to Sheffield United to gain top-flight experience. Many pundits and a section of Man United fans are tipping him to become the number one goalkeeper for Man United next season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be facing a dilemma in his goalkeeping department next season. David De Gea’s position as Man United Number one has been under severe scrutiny after committing some errors leading to goals this season, and his place looks set to come under a new threat from Dean Henderson. In terms of the statistics, there is a solid argument that Dean Henderson should usurp De Gea as Man United Number One come next season.

Is Dean Henderson currently better than De Gea?

Dean Henderson has been in a superb form and has kept ten clean sheets so far this season. He has also risen to every challenge put in front of him. Henderson has demonstrated his skill in a vast amount of situations and has shown his capabilities in a one on one circumstances, pulling some world-class saves.

Henderson also has incredible reflexes and techniques like making himself big and giving the attacker a far lower chance of scoring. Also, he does not make mistakes. Henderson’s save rate stands at 76% compared to De Gea’s 71%.

The young English keeper has also made more clearances and won more aerial duels than De Gea. Henderson has made just one error leading to a goal. That came against Liverpool, and whiles De Gea has made three errors leading to a goal. Dean Henderson has made 100 more passes than De Gea so far this season. Henderson has got age on his side and can also boast of Premier League experience.

At United, De Gea is supported by an experienced back four. If Henderson becomes the number one for Man United next season, he can replicate double what he is currently doing. Henderson is in contention to win the Golden gloves award for most clean sheets and might also feature in the Premier League team of the season. If he wins the Golden gloves, he will be the first goalkeeper outside of Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool ever to earn the award in its 15-year history. On the other hand, although David De Gea’s season has been full of ups and downs, he is one of today’s best keepers in world football. Where would Man United be in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era without De Gea? That is why a section of the United fans still want him to be their number one next season. He has been named United’s player of the season four times in his Old Trafford career. De Gea’s form has dipped with his recent howler coming against Everton in a game which saw him gift Dominic Calvert-Lewin a goal. De Gea has made more saves than Henderson and has made incredible saves this season to win matches for Man United.

What’s next for both keepers?

David De Gea has been the first-choice keeper for Man United since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2011. He has won the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League, Carabao Cup and the Community Shield for Man United, which means experience does hand De Gea custodian advantage ahead of Henderson. Even though he has committed some blunders, he is still an outstanding keeper and is like a god figure in between the sticks of Man United with age is still on his side at 29. Although statistically, Dean Henderson is ahead than De Gea this season, Solskjaer will likely maintain De Gea as his number one next season. Henderson is young, but the big question is, can he handle the pressure and criticism that comes with being a Man United first-choice keeper? There is no doubt that Dean Henderson is the future of Man United and has proven more than enough that he can be Man United’s number one, but he should stay at Sheffield for a season to learn more. At the moment, Henderson is in contention for the England number one spot. However, at Man United, he might play second fiddle to De Gea should he decide to challenge him for the first choice, and that will ruin his chances of becoming England’s Number one.
