Why Solkjaer is struggling in Man United

stretford end old trafford
Will he be able to turn the bad trend around?

Manchester United appointed Solskjaer as carter taker manager on 19 December 2018, taking over from Jose Mourinho for the rest of 2018-2019 season. He won his first eight games in charge on the way to an overall record of 14 victories and two draws 16 games, amazing more premier league points than any other club during that time. He was later appointed as a permanent manager for Manchester united.

Recruitments Ole made

Solskjaer made couple of signings prior to the 2019-2020 season. He signed Aaron wan Bissaka from crystal palace, Daniel James from Swansea city and a record fee for a Leicester City defender Harry Maguire. The likes of Romelu Lukaku and Darmian were sold to inter and Parma respectively whiles Alexis Sanchez and Chris Smalling were loaned to inter and As Roma. Manchester United enjoyed a pretty good pre-season winning all their 6 matches. A section of United fans were very confident moving to this season.

Failure to replace certain players

After thrashing Chelsea by 4goals to nil, United have failed to score more than one goal after 8 premier league matches and they are 2 points above relegation zone that have left the fans of united frustrated. Although the new arrivals have settled in well but still have not solve the problems at united. Romelu Lukaku and Herrera are yet to be replaced. The failure to improve in midfield this summer is still baffling. With the departures of Maroune Fellaini and Ander Herrera, Solskjaer knew he was going to be short in the middle if they didn’t recruit, and they didn’t. Fellaini left in January and it was known for a long while Herrera would not be committing to a new deal but ole and the chief executive officer Edward Woodward did nothing about it. Lack of clinical finishers instead of ole to replace Romelu Lukaku with a prolific striker who can bang in 20 goals a season but he places his faith in Marcus Rashford, Anthony martial and Academy prospect mason Greenwood. Lack of cutting edge in games against wolves, crystal palace, Southampton and Newcastle.

Tactical Issues

Moving forward Solskjaer currently has a lot of issues that he needs to address at united but he should start by changing his formation. Solskjaer should play formation that will suit the world cup winner Paul Pogba, he is by far united most creative player but playing him so deep limits him and wastes his attacking talents. Therefore, a three man midfield playing Pogba further up the pitch will give him the freedom and license that will help united break down rigid and compact defense. Pogba is United’s only world class outfield player but he’s a maverick who likes to take risks and fails to track back so playing him in a midfield two will always leave the defense vulnerable. The midfield looks light and ordinary without Pogba.

Injuries affecting the club

But we can put all the blame on ole’s head because injuries has been a major factor for his side poor run of form this season. United are without a host of first team players so far this season. The ongoing injury crisis at the club is a major concern for the United manager. With the likes of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard and Eric Bailly are now recovering from various injuries they have picked up. Martial started the season on a bright note scoring 2 goals in 3 matches before picking up a thigh injury in their game against crystal palace. Pogba picked up an ankle injury in their fourth game against Southampton. He recovered and played a mid-week carabao cup game against Rochdale and against Arsenal after that game he has not feature in any game for united again. They really need their midfield maestro and goal scorer back.

Players lacking form

Furthermore some of the senior players form this season has been very shambolic and woeful. The likes of Rashford, Mata, Linderlorf, Matic, Fred and Lingard. Rashford this season is neither United’s best central striker nor best left winger at the moment. He has scored 4 goals this season 2 from a spot kick and 2 from open play. He was very wasteful in games against Southampton, crystal palace and Newcastle united. LInderlorf this season has made a couple of mistakes that has led to goals against crystal palace and Southampton. Mata and Matic are not the players we used to know some of years back. Age is not on their side and are in a declining stage of their career.
