World Rugby Sevens Series Preview:
Michaela Blyde, the Black Ferns’ flying winger, is still the one to watch, having scored 38 tries this season.
In the try-scoring rankings, she is only second to Australia’s Maddison Levi. She’ll be aiming to extend her lead in Hong Kong and aid the reigning world and series champions to win their second title of the season.
Things are a little less predictable for the eighth of 11 men’s events, where Argentina is the in-form team, having won their second game of the season in Vancouver to secure second place in the standings.
Standings leaders New Zealand will be hoping to rebound from their disappointing quarter-final exit in Canada, while world and Olympic champions Fiji, who have historically been the most successful team in Hong Kong, cannot be overlooked.
Los Pumas flyer and Youth Olympic Games gold medalist Marcos Moneta, All Blacks Sevens wing – and this season’s leading scorer with 28 tries – Akuila Rokolisoa, and Ireland’s Jordan Conroy, who can score from anywhere on the field, will be the men to watch.
Remember, there’s, even more, to play for this season, with the top four teams in the 2022/23 world series automatically qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
With only one women’s competition left following the event in Hong Kong, China, New Zealand and Australia could secure their golden ticket to Paris with a good result this weekend.
