The Old Trafford Club Captain was embroiled in a dispute during a holiday on Mykonos Island in Greece. Captain Harry Maguire of Manchester United is “to be charged with aggravated assault,” according to the local police following a suspected holiday incident in Greece. According to his club, the defender, 27, who was on holiday on Mykonos Island in Greece with family and friends after the season had ended is cooperating fully with Greek police. The police official said that Maguire and the two other prisoners are to be transferred by sea to Syros, where a public prosecutor will charge them.
Petros Vassilakis, a police spokesperson, told media outlets that when the squabble was settled, one of the two parties, along with footballers, started abusing the officers verbally. Several police officers were present. One of three participants – aged 27, 28, and 29 – at some stage took a swipe at one police officer, which resulted in a fight.
They were both arrested, but the other two, including the soccer player, also turned abusive during the attempts to do so. They threw two police officers down, beat them, and punched them with their fists.
“I can’t tell you what they were telling us. All English swear words against the authorities and the work of the police. All three, including the football player, are being held in custody, locked up in Mykonos cell. They will appear before a state prosecutor on the island of Syros later today to be charged with aggravated assault.” He said. A comment released by police with Goal stated that “one of the detainees then tried to offer money so that the trial against them would not be completed.”
Upon losing the Europa League at Sevilla last month, the squad of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was given two weeks off.
With his family and his friends, Maguire is in Greece for a break before the United Premier League campaign starts next month. Maguire’s fiancée, Fern Hawkins, posted a picture of the pair in Mykonos on her Instagram page on Thursday night. The couple has two baby daughters, the youngest of whom was born in May. Thanks to quarantine limits because of the coronavirus pandemic, players were only permitted to travel to specific places this season. Greece is on the safe list of flying, which means that when he goes back to England, Maguire does not have to isolate himself. The Mykonos tourist hotspot usually draws 2 million tourists every year, but with just 10,000 inhabitants. The owners of bars and restaurants on the island recently voiced angrily as the Greek Government said they now had to close down at midnight to reduce the spread of Covid-19.
Manchester United released a statement: “The club is aware last night of an alleged incident involving Harry Maguire in Mykonos. “Contact has been made with Harry, and he is fully cooperating with the Greek authorities. At this time, we will be making no further comment.”
The team is scheduled to launch preparing for the new campaign at their Carrington training center in early September. They are to face Burnley at Turf Moor at the outset of the 2020-21 season, but this game was delayed, which allows the United players to relax more after their stint in the Europa League. So the new season will be against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
Last summer, Maguire moved from Leicester to Old Trafford for £ 80 million ($105 million) and then became the central figure in Solskjaer Management. The center-back was Solskjaer ‘s captain during last season and was important for United as they finished third in the Premier League and qualified for the UEFA Champions League. He was one of the few players who managed to play every single minute in all 38 games in the league.
For Manchester United, Maguire played a crucial part in the semifinals of three competitions – the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and Europa League. The next competitive fixture for the club will open its premier league campaign against the Crystal Palace in 2020/21 on 19 September. United will be delayed in the new season because they participated in this summer’s European competition.
