Thiago Alcantara’s future has been making the headlines in recent weeks, and reports from Germany have suggested the Bayern Munich midfield maestro will leave the club this summer. Thiago Alcantara joined Bayern Munich from Barcelona, and after seven years at Bayern Munich, it seems Alcantara is keen to embark on a new challenge and won’t be extending his current Bayern contract which expires next year. The Bundesliga champions would prefer to sell the player this summer than watch him leave for nothing next summer. Alcantara has had a glittering career so far, having won eight trophies at Barcelona between 2010 to 2013.
Since joining Bayern Munich, Thiago has won seven successive Bundesliga titles and four German Cups, and he could well add this season’s Champions League to his trophy cabinet. He has been the heartbeat of Bayern Munich midfield over the years and will be a big miss for Bayern Munich next season since he has been an essential player for Hansi Flick this season. Alcantara is one of the few natural football talents in the world. With his quality, excellent technique, and unique skills, he would be a perfect midfield signing for any club in the world. He is currently the subject of a move to the Premier League with Liverpool leading the race to sign him.
Is Alcantara the missing piece in Liverpool’s Team?
The Spanish international is a reported transfer target for Liverpool, who would love to sign him to strengthen the squad. Alcantara fits the profile of the Liverpool team perfectly. One thing is clear, Liverpool cannot afford to stand still just because they have won the league. Their competitors Man City, Man United, and Chelsea, will be analyzing Liverpool’s success and finding ways to neutralize them next season. As a result, having another method of attack would be beneficial to Klopp’s side, and Alcantara would give them something that the supporters have long suggested as a weakness in the team, which is a creative impetus in the midfield. Liverpool’s midfield currently boasts of the likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, and James Milner, who are excellent in retaining possession.
However, they cannot make penetrative passes and destabilize opposition defense. The likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are decent passers of the ball, but they are injury prone and sometimes inconsistent.
If there is one player they are missing in that midfield, it’s a technically gifted player who is more of a creator and a dribbler. This season, Alcantara completed the highest number of passes per game than any other Bundesliga midfielder, and his dribbling ability is also a rare quality for elite deep-lying playmakers. Since the summer of 2018, Liverpool has not made any marquee signing. As such, the addition of Alcantara will be an upgrade on the Liverpool midfield. It will make sense for Liverpool to go in for him now.
Should the Manchester clubs target him?
Man City are also keen to strengthen their squad to help them reclaim the Premier League title next season. Pep Guardiola may be on the lookout for reinforcements in the middle of the park with captain David Silva departing the club after the conclusion of their Champions League campaign. Alcantara is the perfect kind of midfielder that Pep Guardiola wants. He is tactically astute and capable of operating in several midfield roles. Both Guardiola and Alcantara have a similar understanding of the attractive and exciting brand of football.
It will make sense if Guardiola goes in for the Spanish international because he has already managed Alcantara twice during his stints in the dugout at Barcelona and Bayern Munich. When asked whether Alcantara would flourish in English football, Guardiola stated that a player who can excel at both Barcelona and Bayern Munich could play in the Premier League.
Man City’s neighbors Man United are currently prioritizing moves for a winger and a midfielder. With the kind of midfield Man United possesses, Alcantara would be an excellent signing for them. Solskjaer will get the option to play a dream midfield of Pogba, Fernandes, and Alcantara. Man United have got history with Alcantara. Man United came close to signing the player in 2013. However, Alcantara moved to Bayern Munich while David Moyes, then head coach of Man United opted for Marouane Fellaini instead.
